Scooby Crewe wins Best Krazy Designed Kart 🏆

  15 Jul 2024

I had an exciting weekend soapbox racing with Scooby Crewe (no prizes for guessing the inspiration!)

Over the past few months, we've been busy building a soapbox to race in the first Krazy Races Crewe Soapbox Derby in Badger Park yesterday. After a busy Saturday adding secondary brakes (important even in the race!), it was time to join the event.

With a van body, full wood construction, being near the size limit and strong yet friendly competition, we unfortunately didn't make it to the top 10 though kept beating the PBs in each round (and had a lot of fun taking part!).

We were awarded the trophy 🏆 for Best Krazy Designed Kart presented by the sponsored charities Hopes & Beams and St Luke's Hospice, a wonderful achievement to end a fantastic day racing and months of planning, design, and building.

Thank you to the organisers, competitors, and spectators for making an amazing fun event.

There were so many fantastic soapbox designs, though the one that stood out to me was the DeLorean created by students from Crewe UTC: consistently top ranking and built by a college team. They reminded me of why it is so important in further and higher education to have opportunities to apply theoretical technical and engineering skills in practical contexts: this is a facet I always promote when designing new academic programmes, and encouraged when I was Chief Judge for the IET's Global Challenge Young Innovators of the Year award with designs novel engineering solutions within conflict zones.

We already have lots of ideas for the next soapbox (not going to give any clues yet... watch this space!)
